How ViMai Menkyo works: learn, take mock exams and review mistakes

ViMai Menkyo has quite a few parts: lessons, road signs, topic practice, mock exams, mistakes and terms. If you are not sure where to start, this page walks through each part in the order you should use it, and explains the two modes that matter most: learn mode and exam mode.

Start with the entry test and a goal

The first time you open the app, take the entry test: 20 questions mixed from every topic. It gives a predicted score and shows your weak topics. Then set the test you are aiming at, your planned exam date, a daily goal (10, 20, 30 or 50 questions) and a study reminder. The Readiness screen lists what you have and have not achieved, for example whether your last three exams reached the pass mark, how many signs you have mastered and whether any question has been missed three times or more.

Learn: a two-stage path

The Learn section has two stages. Stage 1 has 14 units for Karimen and stage 2 has 17 units for Honmen. Each unit contains short lessons made of cards, and each card has a key point, a common trap and links to related signs and terms. Each lesson ends with a short quiz, and you can bookmark lessons in a notebook. You do not have to follow the order strictly, but stage 1 is the base for stage 2.

Road signs and terms

The sign library has 209 signs and road markings in six groups: regulatory, warning, instruction, guide, supplementary and markings. Each has its meaning, what is and is not allowed and the trap in the test. There are 14 groups of look-alike signs with comparison tables. The sign quiz has five modes: see the sign and pick the meaning, read the meaning and pick the sign, look-alike pairs, review signs not yet mastered and a 60-second challenge. The terms section explains technical words in both English and Vietnamese. See also Japanese road signs.

Learn mode and exam mode: what is the difference?

This is the easiest thing to confuse, because the same question can show up in both.

Learn modeExam mode
FeedbackRight after every questionNo explanations in the middle
Right answerMoves on by itself after about 0.4 secondsNo right or wrong shown; use previous/next and the question grid to move around
Wrong answerStops and shows the explanation; you move on when you have read itScored only when you submit
TimerNoYes, counting down for that exam type
Use it forLessons, topic practice, mistake reviewMock exams and end-of-block checks

The reason a right answer moves on by itself is to keep the pace brisk, like the real test. A wrong answer stops because that is where you learn the most. Exam mode has the timer, a question grid, flags for doubtful questions and a warning if any question is unanswered; after you submit, answers cannot be changed. Topic practice

When you want to drill one area, such as signs, overtaking or expressways, go to Topic practice. Each topic shows its number of questions, your accuracy and how many you are getting wrong right now. You choose how many questions (10, 20, 50 or all), where they come from (new, wrong or mixed) and the mode (learn with instant explanations, or a timed test). At the end the app summarises right and wrong and lets you retry the wrong ones.

Mistake review at 1, 3 and 7 days

Every wrong answer in topic practice, quizzes and mock exams is added to your mistake list. Review is spaced: a wrong question returns after 1 day, then 3 days, then 7 days. A question counts as fixed only after two correct answers in a row, and a new mistake resets that run to zero. You can filter by status (not reviewed, repeated mistakes, fixed, flagged) or by topic. The 30-day study plan leans on this habit every day.

Accounts, sync and working without a connection

You can start studying immediately without an account, and your progress stays on the device. Signing in is optional, and when you do, your progress (lessons, mistakes, scores) syncs between your devices. The question bank is inside the app, so individual questions are not fetched from a server, and your browser may keep the app files after the first visit. That means studying with a weak signal usually works, but exactly how it behaves depends on your browser and device, and progress sync and VIP checks need a connection. Do not rely on offline use right before test day: open the app and try it beforehand.

The app runs in the browser on iPhone, Android and desktop and can be added to your home screen like an app. Exams 1 to 5 of each type are free, and VIP unlocks the remaining exams.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between learn mode and exam mode?

Learn mode gives feedback straight away: a right answer moves on after about 0.4 seconds, a wrong answer stops and shows the explanation. Exam mode gives no explanations in the middle, runs a timer and scores only when you submit.

How does the 1, 3 and 7 day mistake review work?

Each wrong question returns after 1 day, then 3 days, then 7 days. It counts as fixed only after two correct answers in a row; a new mistake starts the count again.

Can I use the app without an internet connection?

Questions and lessons are inside the app, so a lot of studying works with a weak signal, but results depend on your browser and device, and progress sync and VIP checks need a connection. Try it beforehand.

Do I need to sign in to study?

No. You can start straight away and your progress is kept on the device. Sign in if you want it on several devices.
