Japan driving licence mock tests: 60 exams and how to use them
ViMai Menkyo has 60 fixed mock exams, split evenly across the three written tests: 20 Karimen, 20 Honmen and 20 licence conversion. Fixed means a set always contains the same questions, so you can compare your scores from one attempt to the next. This page explains what each type contains, how a set is put together and a sensible order for working through all 20.

Three test types, 20 exams each
Each written test has its own format, and the mock exams keep that format exactly: number of questions, time and pass mark.
| Exam type | Format | Pass | Content drawn from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Karimen (仮免) | 50 true/false, 30 minutes, 1 point each | 45/50 | Stage 1 (14 lesson units) |
| Honmen (本免) | 95 questions, 50 minutes: 90 true/false (1 point) and 5 illustration questions (2 points) | 90/100 | Stages 1 and 2 (31 units) |
| Licence conversion (外免切替) | 50 true/false, 30 minutes, no illustration questions | 45/50 | Stage 1 |
Exams 1 to 5 of each type are free, and exams 6 to 20 are part of VIP. For the arithmetic behind the pass marks, see how the tests are scored.
How a set is put together
All 60 exams are built from a bank of more than 2,300 questions written by ViMai and grouped into 31 units. A few rules keep each exam closer to a real paper than to a random handful of questions:
- Every unit gets its share. The number of questions taken from a unit is proportional to its size, so large topics such as signs, licences and penalty points appear more often than small ones. Signs are weighted down a little so that an exam does not turn into a sign quiz.
- No repeats. Within one test type a question does not come back in another exam until its unit has run out of fresh questions.
- Balanced answers. Each exam mixes true and false answers, so there is no habit such as "mostly true" to lean on.
- No giveaways. Two questions where one reveals the answer to the other are never placed in the same exam.
- Five different scenes in Honmen. Every Honmen exam has exactly 5 illustration questions about different situations, and no scene is reused across the 20 exams, which makes 100 scenes. See how to answer hazard illustration questions.
Every question is written by ViMai against the law currently in force. None of them is copied from a real exam.

Before you press start
The screen before each exam shows the number of questions, the time and the pass mark. You can also pick the question language for that attempt, English or Vietnamese. The real test uses a single language, so once you are comfortable, try the exam in the language you plan to sit it in.
While you are taking it
Exam mode is different from study mode: no explanations in the middle, a countdown timer, a question grid to jump to any question and a flag for the ones you are unsure about. When you submit, the app tells you how many questions are unanswered and how many are flagged. Once submitted, answers cannot be changed, just like the real test.
On pacing, Karimen gives you about 36 seconds per question and Honmen about 31 seconds, including the 5 scenes that need a closer look. Make a confident first pass, flag the doubtful ones and come back to them on the second pass.
After you submit
The result shows pass or fail, your score by topic and the list of wrong answers with an explanation for each. Wrong answers go straight into your review list, and the app keeps your attempt history so that you can see whether your scores are climbing. The review schedule is explained on how ViMai Menkyo works.
In what order should you take the 20 exams?
- Take exam 1 early. Do not wait until you have finished every lesson. The first score shows which topics are weak so that you study the right ones.
- Study first, then take the next exam. After each submission, work through every wrong answer before you move on.
- Do not memorise answer positions. Retaking an exam only helps when you understand why each answer is right. If all you remember is "question 17 is false", the score will fool you.
- Aim a little above the pass mark. For Karimen, around 48/50 on consecutive exams is a comfortable cushion. For Honmen, aim for several points above 90.
- Keep a few exams for the last week, and take them in one sitting without pausing, so the clock feels familiar.

Frequently asked questions
How many mock exams are free?
The first 5 exams of each type (Karimen, Honmen and licence conversion) are free, which is 15 free exams out of 60. Exams 6 to 20 of each type are part of VIP.
Are the mock exams the same as the real test?
The format is the same: number of questions, time, scoring and pass mark. The questions themselves are written by ViMai against current law and are not taken from real exams.
Can I retake an exam I have already done?
Yes, and the app keeps your attempt history for each exam. Retaking straight away only teaches you the answers, though, so review the wrong ones first.
Is the conversion exam different from the Karimen exam?
It has the same size (50 questions, 30 minutes, pass with 45) and draws on stage 1 content, but it is a separate set of 20 exams.
